The Gospel of Matthew is the only one of the four Canonical Gospels to mention the Magi, states that they came“from the East” to worship the Christ. Although the account does not tell how many they were, the three gifts led to a widespread assumption that they were three as well.
The traditions of the Magi are propagated and passed on by Aramaic Christianity, the religious milieu linked with Iranian lore. Gaspar appears in the apocryphal Act of Thomas as Gondophares. In the beginning Gondophares is a Indo-Parthian king, and his dynasty represented the house of Suren, highest of the first five families of Arsacid Iran.
Gondophares’ coat of arms is the astral sign of Mercury. One element that distinguishes him as an expert in Astrological things. In Western paintings Gaspar will be the youngest Magus of black skin. A fact linked to the influence of Mediaeval Letter of Prester John.
